So, I know this can be a tough one. There are so so many options out there, and how do you even know where to start? That’s the way I feel so often these days when I am looking for anything at all. It always helps when you have someone who can recommend something to you (like so many of our ladies do with their friends!), but not everyone always feels comfortable sharing that they are wanting to do a session like this. I GET IT!!! Choosing the right boudoir photographer is a big deal. You want someone who will make you feel comfortable, capture your most authentic self, and deliver stunning photos you’ll treasure forever. But how do you find the perfect photographer for such an intimate session? Here are some tips to help you pick the best St. Louis boudoir photographer and feel confident about your decision.

1. Check Their Portfolio

Obviously, you want to like what you see! Start by taking a good look at a photographer’s portfolio. Every boudoir photographer has their own style, whether it’s dark and moody, light and airy, or bold and glamorous. Then you have photographers like us who like many different styles and have many different looks. Do the photos resonate with you? Are you drawn to the way they capture their subjects? Pay attention to the poses, the lighting, and the overall vibe. If a photographer’s work makes you say, “Yes, that’s the look I want,” you’re on the right track.

2. Read Reviews and Testimonials

Don’t just take their word for it—see what past clients have to say. Reading reviews and testimonials from other women who’ve had boudoir sessions can give you insight into how a photographer works. Did clients feel comfortable during the shoot? Were they happy with the final photos? If a St. Louis boudoir photographer consistently receives praise for making clients feel confident and empowered, it’s a good sign they know what they’re doing. Also…ask your friends! I bet you know more people who have done sessions than you would think.

3. Meet for a Consultation

You should feel 100% comfortable with your photographer before the session begins. Many boudoir photographers offer consultations, either in person or via video chat, where you can discuss your ideas and ask any questions. This is your chance to get to know their personality and communication style. Are they warm and approachable? Do they listen to your concerns and understand your vision? Trusting your photographer is key to a successful boudoir shoot. We do most of our consults over video chat, but I am available to meet you in our studio as well! This is also a good time to have a look at our client lingerie closet to see if there is anything you know you want to use for your session.

4. Experience Matters

This is huge. Boudoir photography requires a unique set of skills, especially when it comes to posing and lighting. A photographer with experience in boudoir will know how to guide you through poses that flatter your body, enhance your best features, and create a comfortable, safe environment. Don’t be afraid to ask how many boudoir sessions they’ve done or if they specialize in this type of photography. An experienced boudoir photographer will have the know-how to make you look and feel your absolute best. I shot my first boudoir session approaching 15 years ago, and we have seen plenty of people who do not know how to make their clients feel comfortable!

5. Make Sure They Offer Privacy and Discretion

Boudoir photography is personal, and it’s important to feel confident that your photos will be handled with care. Look for a photographer who values privacy and discretion. Many boudoir photographers will have policies in place regarding image sharing. You should feel comfortable discussing where and how your images will be used—whether you prefer them to remain private or are okay with them being shared (with your permission) on the photographer’s website or social media. We always appreciate when our clients give us permission to use their photos, but it is NEVER assumed. Every woman gets to make that choice!

6. Consider the Photographer’s Studio and Equipment

The setting where your boudoir session takes place can impact how comfortable you feel. Does the photographer have a dedicated studio space? What’s the vibe like—cozy, elegant, or edgy? If they shoot on location, do they bring high-quality lighting and equipment to create the perfect atmosphere? Ask about their studio options or whether they can recommend locations around St. Louis that suit your style and vision. We do most of our sessions in our amazing studio, but there are many different options available!

7. Ask About How the Session Experience Will Look

Boudoir photography is more than just showing up and posing—it’s about the entire experience, from start to finish. Does the photographer offer packages that include professional hair and makeup services? Do they provide guidance on what to wear or how to prepare? A great St. Louis boudoir photographer will walk you through every step of the process, ensuring that you feel confident and empowered throughout your session.

8. Get a Feel for Their Editing Style

Boudoir photography editing styles can vary widely. Some photographers prefer natural, minimal retouching, while others may offer more dramatic edits. Look through their portfolio to see how they handle skin tones, lighting, and overall image enhancement. If you prefer a natural look, make sure the photographer’s editing aligns with that, or vice versa. Don’t be afraid to ask about their approach to retouching and whether they’ll make adjustments based on your preferences.

9. Evaluate Their Pricing and Packages

Boudoir photography can be an investment, but it’s worth it for an experience and photos you’ll cherish. When considering pricing, take a look at what’s included in each package. Do they offer albums, prints, or digital images? Are there options for additional services like makeup, wardrobe styling, or custom editing? A great St. Louis boudoir photographer will offer packages that cater to a variety of needs and budgets while ensuring you receive high-quality service.
